ADAM STRANGE

BY: VANESSA GONZALES

Adam Strange is a character not nearly as cracked as his name and some of his paintings would lead one to believe. This Cal State Long Beach alum is an extraordinarily talented artist in practice and mind who is ready to shake up the scene, and open to help in doing so. My initial exposure to Mr. Strange was through a couple paintings I had seen. The first being a fairly large canvas with a proportionally large animatronic, robotesque lookin' dog bust, with sleek lines, a high level of detail and vibrant colors. The second painting came across my path after a friend of mine had bought it. In showing me the painting, my friend insisted I closely examine the subject I was viewing. The canvas contained a dance scene with two main protagonists embraced and slow dancing in the center. Upon closer examination it becomes apparent that the covert operation undergone by the male dance partner was not so innocuous. Nonchalantly, he had his hand down the female dance partner's underwear. Impressed I was, for the painting seemed carefully calculated in its strategic use of color and technique, masking the brazen activity boldly displayed within the center of the piece. A fan of each painting, I was surprised when I found out that each work was by the same person. It was something I found refreshing in a time when it seems that so many artist are attempting to create a narrow aesthetic for themselves.
I recently had the opportunity to have a couple of drinks and some snacks with Mr. Adam Strange, where we had the chance to discuss

artistic inspiration and philosophy etc. When asked about his extremely eclectic style, Adam replied that he is "always working on ten different paintings at once in order to try and cover the gamut of everything going on in my head, every different style influencing me." Adam's eclectic style reflects a keen awareness of the dynamic world around him, for that is where the majority of his inspiration derives. When asked about where his conscious inspiration came from, Adam acknowledges his environment by quickly replying "could be anything from a song on the radio, to people in my life." Adam goes on, continuing with his philosophy that

"art should have as much a message as life has, and the message of life should be mimicked in art." This philosophy is further reinforced with his outlook that the work he creates is not simply about him. For Adam, painting is not really about him, but about interpretations about life, and how life works.
Adam Strange is a man that extends beyond the self-indulgent outlet of art and attempts a connection with his audience.
